Azaleas, Belles, and maybe a few Beers….Azalea Festival – Part 1

This is part 1 of a multi-part post. There’s no way I can do this trip and event justice in a single entry.

Crystal and I were invited to attend some of the events at the Azalea festival in Wilmington, NC this year.
For those of you not familiar with the event (I was not) here’s the link for next year’s festival NC Azalea Festival.
The general feel of the event is unapologetically Southern. It is a festival designed to celebrate Wilmington, spring time and true Southen Hospitality. The various events happening all over the city also provide the residents and guests with multiple opportunities for entertainment. There are concerts, parades, parties, garden tours, a horse show, shag contests, and a street festival. In addition, various celebrities are also invited to attend the festivities (This explains how and why I had the opportunity to meet Beth Grant! More about that in another post.). Various beauty queens from the eastern part of North Carolina are invited and attend most of the events. The Azalea Belles are at events all over the city with hoop-skirted dresses. The flowers are in bloom. It’s a time to socialize, meet new people and have a ‘large’ time. Crystal and I had a great time and we hope to go back next year. We weren’t able to stay for the entire festival.

Crystal and I attended the opening ceremony and Queen’s Coronation. We also had the opportunity to attend the Celebrity Luncheon at Cape Fear Country Club.

The festival lasts for 5 days each year in April.

More to come in the next post….
